Current Account - Using This Account

Our Current Account is open to all permanent UK residents over 14 years of age and can be opened by an individual or jointly between two people.

You can open an account with as little as £1 up to a maximum holding with Northern Rock of £2 million per customer.

You have the choice of opening your Account through one of our branches* or by post via our registered Head Office.

To open an account simply download an application form, print it out, complete, sign and either take it along to your nearest branch or send it to us by post via our registered Head Office . Don't forget your opening deposit and suitable proof of identity. Please also ensure that you understand all Charges applicable to this account before applying.

Your initial deposit can be made by:

• cash (branch only*);
• cheque (in the interest of security, please make your cheque payable to ‘Northern Rock for the account of (insert Account Holder(s) name(s))' and crossed ‘A/c Payee only'; or
• transfer from an existing Northern Rock account (any withdrawal restrictions on your existing account may apply).

Your interest is calculated daily on the cleared balance and is paid into your Account monthly.

For joint accounts, interest payments can be paid part net/part gross. So if you don't pay tax, you can still claim gross interest on your share.

There is no interest paid on balances below £50.

You can make payments into your account by cash*, cheque,
Faster Payments, BACS or CHAPS. Ask your bank to send the payment(s) quoting sort code 08-60-64 for Faster Payments and BACS and 08-02-65 and account number 50048407 for CHAPS, together with your Current Account number. You can also transfer from another Northern Rock account.

To transfer funds from a bank account outside the UK into your Northern Rock Current Account via CHAPS (Telegraphic Transfer) you should quote:

Sort Code: 08-00-51
Account Number: 50048407
Reference: Your name and Current Account Number.

With the Northern Rock Current Account you have immediate access to your money, whenever you need it. We'll even provide you with a chequebook and also, if required, an ATM card (subject to status).

The ATM card enables you to withdraw cash across the counter at any Northern Rock branch* or withdraw up to £250 each day, round the clock, from over 50,000 LINK machines. All Northern Rock ATM cards are Chip and PIN enabled.

You can also issue a personal cheque, arrange a standing order or direct debit, use your debit payment card, arrange a CHAPS transfer, give us written instructions or use an ATM card (subject to status).

We'll keep you up to date with regular statements, which show the balance, transaction details and interest added to your Account.

You can also obtain a balance or mini statement from any Northern Rock ATM.
