Supporting our communities
Community work
Northern Rock is committed to providing practical support to communities in the areas in which we operate. We also encourage our colleagues across the business to volunteer their time and skills to help make a contribution to the causes they support and the communities they live and work in.
Northern Rock Foundation
The Northern Rock Foundation is an independent charity formed when Northern Rock Building Society demutualised in 1997 and has been supported by Northern Rock since then. The Foundation aims to tackle disadvantage and improve quality of life for individuals and groups in the North East and Cumbria.
The Foundation gives grants to organisations which help people who are vulnerable, disadvantaged, homeless, living in poverty or are victims of crime or discrimination.

Samaritans
Northern Rock staff have chosen Samaritans as their Charity of the Year for 2010/11 and have been helping to raise funds for local branches of Samaritans.
Samaritans is a national charity that offers 24/7 support for people in emotional distress, including those experiencing financial difficulties. Funds raised by Northern Rock staff will go towards supporting a project to update Samaritans' contact systems. Called Samaritans Connect, this pioneering system will allow the charity to answer 70,000 more calls each year - from people experiencing emotional distress in the North East, the rest of the UK and Ireland.
