Handy tips for moving in

Once you're ready to move in to your new home there are just a few more things to tick off. We've pulled together a couple of simple tips to help you settle in.

Preparing to move

Once your completion date is confirmed, you can start to prepare for the big move.

  • It's worth making a list of all of the things that you will need to move and thinking about how you are going to get them to your new home.
  • You'll need to arrange insurance cover for your new home and all of your belongings. It's also worth checking to see if your insurance covers your contents during transit in case they are damaged on route to your new property.

The big move

So you're ready to move, but hold on, there a few more things that you still need to do.

  • First and foremost, make sure that you have booked the time off work as you can't move in to your new home if you're not there.
  • Secondly, if you are currently renting a property, make sure that you read the meters before you leave, just so you aren't charged for anything more than you have used. Also, make sure that you settle all of your outstanding bills as you don't want any CCJs appearing on your credit history.
  • Also, make sure you check the meters on your new property as soon as you move in so that you have a record of your starting point with the provider.
  • Before you move in, it's worth pulling together a 'survival pack' containing all of the essentials that you will need to get you through your first day in your new property, such as tea, coffee, bread and milk.

After you've moved in

You'd be forgiven for thinking that you deserve a well-earned rest after finally moving in to your new home, however there are still a few jobs left to do.

  • If you haven't already, make sure that you have adequate insurance cover for your property and yourself.
